Selecting
a Representative from a Mobile Indigenous Group to Attend Durban in September
How do we go
about raising interest in fairly and equitably selecting a member of a mobile
indigenous group involved in conservation activities to attend meetings in Durban
in September 2003. I have a few ideas from the Middle East, but would like to
see this as something all signatories of the Dana Declaration and other concerned
parties took part in. (20

1) Dawn, I've
contacted the Institut Dayakologi in West Kalimantan, Indonesia (a very active
indigenous NGO concerned about a range of issues environmental and social)
to see if they'd be interested in being considered to attend the WPC. I will
forward their response to you when I receive it. You mention equitably identifying
indigenous organizations. This might be difficult especially in a place like
Indonesia where such NGOs are numerous; even those concerned with mobile peoples'
issues. Some will always get left out, even inadvertently, as I/we am/are
relying on personal knowledge and networks. I'm honestly not sure what solution
there is, if any. (9

2) One other
item: Would mobile people reps to the WPC have to/be encouraged to endorse
the Declaration? (9
