Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Kuala Lumpur, February 2004.
The seventh Conference of Parties (COP7) of the Convention on Biodiversity was held between 9-20 February 2004 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (http://www.unep-wcmc.org/index.shtml?http://www.unep-wcmc.org/latenews/meetings/CoP7/index.shtml~main). This event was attended by various IGO and NGO representatives concerned with indigenous and traditional peoples (including mobile peoples), equity and protected areas. Inputs into the draft process of the work element of the CBD included the addition of an entire section on Governance, Participation , Equity and Benefit-Sharing, under which various aspects of participatory conservation were included.
Representatives of the Dana Declaration as well as WAMIP participated at this meeting in addition to the 19th Session of the Global Biodiversity Forum (GBF) http://www.gbf.ch/ , which also took place in Kuala Lumpur prior to the COP 7. One of the topics of discussion at the GBF in Malaysia was "Mobile Peoples and Biodiversity Conservation" where representatives of mobile indigenous peoples discussed issues of landscape management and connectivity. Topics concerning mobile indigenous peoples' land, cultures, relationships with protected areas, biodiversity, and sustainable livelihoods were also debated.
